WhatsApp Conversion Rate: Definition and How to Measure It

WhatsApp conversion rate is the share of website sessions that include a click to start a WhatsApp conversation. It is the core metric of WhatsApp CRO (conversion rate optimization).

How to calculate WhatsApp conversion rate

Divide the number of sessions with at least one WhatsApp click by the total number of sessions, then multiply by 100. Measuring sessions rather than raw clicks prevents one visitor from being counted many times.

For example, 40 converted sessions out of 1,000 sessions is a 4% conversion rate. The inputs come from WhatsApp link tracking: without recorded clicks and sessions there is nothing to divide.

What influences it

Traffic source, landing page content, how visible the WhatsApp button is, engagement time and scroll depth all affect the rate. A pre-filled message also removes typing effort for the visitor; see the WhatsApp link format for how it is added.

Comparing these by source and landing page shows where to improve. The source split depends on WhatsApp UTM tracking, which keeps the campaign attached to each session.

Conversion rate versus clicks and messages

Conversion rate counts sessions that clicked. It does not prove a message was sent, because WhatsApp does not report that to the link owner. Treat it as an intent metric and read it next to engagement and lead quality.

The gap between a click and a real chat is explained in WhatsApp click versus message.

How SmartWA reports it

SmartWA reports converted sessions and session conversion rate next to engagement rate, bounce rate and lead quality score, broken down by source, campaign, landing page and device.

It is shown for the whole site and per website, with 7, 30, 90, 180 and 365-day presets, so a change to a landing page or a backup WhatsApp number setup can be checked against the same metric over time.

WhatsApp conversion rate: frequently asked questions

What is a good WhatsApp conversion rate?

It depends on traffic source, offer and industry, so compare your own rate across sources and landing pages over time instead of relying on a single universal benchmark.

Is WhatsApp conversion rate based on clicks or sessions?

Sessions. A converted session is a session with at least one WhatsApp click, so repeat clicks by one visitor count once.
